August Essentials

August is arguably the best summer month in Northern Michigan. The lake is warm, the air is warm, the flowers are in bloom, peaches are in season and we’ve really settled into the rhythm of summer.

Crowds of tourists still flock to this area in the beginning of this month. although they will thin a bit as sports practices begin and in some cases school even starts. I personally think we rob our kids a little when school begins in August and I’m so thankful that schools here don’t start until after Labor Day. I’d much rather sit in a classroom in June than August.

It’s hot today, as one would expect it to be in the beginning of August. The grass is a little crunchy and humidity hangs in the air. Of course this is all relative, 85 degrees and breezy might seem mild compared to some parts of the country. As the month goes on, I’d expect the evenings to get a cooler as. well as the mornings.

We’ll be taking bike rides, heading to the beach, enjoying the last few weeks of boating season and watching all of the late season flowers bloom.

If you’re planning on visiting or living life to the fullest this month in Northern Michigan, here are some of the items I recommend brining along:

Clothing:

You’re going to want a mix of sundresses and lightweight sweaters. Colors are beginning to shift towards fall but we’re still very much wearing classic nautical and yacht inspired styles. I’ve been living in this sweatshirt which is light weight and comes in many color options. And look how cute this sweater is!? I love the short sleeved, beachy look.

Beach Gear:

Bring your inter tubes, beach towels, chairs, coolers and some music for the listening in the sand. I love these towels because they can double as blankets or even a shall if you’re chilly in the evening and sand doesn’t stick to them. Target just released this super cute collapsible wagon from their Hearth and Hand line which would be so convenient for hauling all of your needs through the sand. We have one that we use all the time, except ours isn’t nearly this cute.

For the Home:

This retro inspired fan is currently on sale. We have several scattered throughout our house, including this one and I love them because they mix function and decor together in one cute package. It’s available in lots of colors and there are 2 different sizes. We have the 8 inch one in our living room and a similar 12 in one in each of the bedrooms.

Hope to see you soaking up the last month of summer!
