Upon my very first visit to Misty Farms, I was immediately greeted by a sheep and the most outgoing of all tortoise haired kitties. The sweet country air, the fragrance of fresh cut grass and 19th century barns with their hand sawn boards were the perfect host to Shelby and Paul’s celebration.
Shelby herself is a country girl with refined tastes. The color palette stayed simple with cool autumn tones, drawing inspiration from the wheat fields in the distance, the cotton and milkweed pods and the fading hydrangeas. I shared their mood board earlier this week, but in case you’d like to see it again, you can do so here.
The open air also inspired the day and we took a huge risk by opting to not have a tent in Michigan in October. A very unorthodox approach that paid off big time as we were graced with warm sunshine and 70 degree temperatures. We were very mindful not to upstage our surroundings, so we kept the décor very simple lining the tables with vignettes of pumpkins, pears, budvases and candles. The curiously strong winds did alter our plans a touch, but it added to the charm of an outdoor wedding as we quickly bound together the napkins and forks and weighed down breezy table runners with additional pumpkins and marble cutting boards.
The ceremony by the pond was one of my favorite parts. Nestled back in a private cove of the property, quaint wooden chairs were set in a semi-circle arrangement and cotton rag rugs served as an aisle runner. Crates, plumes grasses and pumpkins clustered together framed the couple as they said their vows, while not disturbing the glorious views. With a watercolor artist present to capture her interpretation of the day as it was to unfold.
As the sun set, the celebration moved from the open air into the barn with dancing and donuts waiting inside. Guests were given blankets as favors to combat the pending chill that inevitably comes with a clear night sky. Candles and bistro lighting added the perfect amount of romance. And true to the simplicity of country life, a single musician kept the dance floor packed all night.
